Ella

My painting was inspired by the work of David Hockney, in particular his piece ‘Edith Devaney’. I was initially attracted by his use of bright complimentary colours, which contrast the sitter’s subdued emotion. This portrait, ‘Ella’, is my way of recreating his work. I pulled techniques from different artists, such as Lucian Freud as well as Hockney, to incorporate different styles in my work. I wanted to capture the physicality of Freud’s paint on the canvass with the empathy of Hockney’s colour.
