Two years ago, as the Russian invasion started, my family fled from Ukraine to seek refuge in the UK. This painting shows my Ukrainian grandmother, who now lives with us in England. Inspired by themes of self-worth and cultural heritage, the backdrop features vyshyvanka (embroidered cloth) that she stitched herself while she wears a cardigan, a testimony to her knitting skills.
