Nicholas Makes Coffee

I have been undertaking a sequence of paintings that explore colour, composition, and subject. Although all three are very familiar to me in this scene (my dad does this every morning in our kitchen), when studied through painting, new colours and points of view come to life. I was inspired by the quiet domesticity of Vermeer’s The Milkmaid for the composition and subject and presented the background as large blocks of colour, inspired by Picasso’s Rose Period.
