This is a portrait of my dad. I was inspired by Kehinde Wiley’s portraits as he substitutes historic Caucasian figures for men and women of African descent. I positioned my dad in a pose reminiscent of Jacobus Blauw in '4' by Jacques-Louis David, whilst altering his clothes and accessories. In the background, I decided to paint figures from the famous Nigerian 'Eŷo' Festival, to represent the omnipresence and importance of Nigerian culture in my dad's life. I painted these figures in a fluid and contemporary style to differentiate them from the foreground.
