After researching the shocking exploitation and masses of landfill produced by the fashion industry, I restructured an old white shirt with glue to make it twist and writhe. I used threads which seem organic and close to nature, which represents the eventual decomposition and resting place for unwanted clothes in landfill. I also wanted to respond to the trend for brands to market clothes as ‘sustainable’ when under the surface they are still often unethically made and harmful to the planet; I wanted to show this contradiction through the harsh white against the rusty tones.
