Inspired by a Suffragette banner and created to highlight the work of Sophia Duleep Singh, god-daughter of Queen Victoria. This mixed media piece draws on influences from Sophia’s Indian heritage as well as famous photographs of the suffragette movement. Sophia was a part of the Women’s Political and Social Union, a friend of the Pankhurst sisters, and refused to pay taxes as a form of protest. She also bravely threw herself at the Prime Minister’s car holding a sign that read “Give Women the Vote!”. She was strong, resilient and supported the women’s cause in a number of countries.
