Our Lady of Lewisham

A photograph of a young mother carrying her baby, which I saw at the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2018, inspired this painting. It made me think about the sometimes-awkward parent-child relationship between a teenage mother and her young child. This part fantastical self-portrait, part modern day nativity, explores the stereotypes of teenage pregnancy.
