This painting is developed from a photo that I took in the Palace Museum in China. Almost everyone around was wearing a mask and it seemed to be a necessary thing. The masks helped keep away the coldness and dust but also formed a barrier between people. This is also why no one cared about the man in the middle carrying a heavy wooden stool. The style was inspired by John Bratby whose paintings of people contain both crowds and sense of space.
